Concept Note
Located in Udaipur, the city of lakes, Restaurant Callisto stands out for its unique use of shapes and materials. The idea was to create a space that is more than just functional. It’s a place where art and engineering meet, offering an extraordinary dining experience. The restaurant’s design aims to be more than a dining space – it’s a work of art that invites visitors into a stunning, conversation-worthy environment.

Design Process
The restaurant is located in a busy commercial area of Udaipur, standing out against the city’s traditional backdrop. Our goal was to break the monotony of the cityscape and bring innovative design into the mix. The design features two intersecting geodesic domes. The larger dome, 50 feet in diameter and 35 feet tall, is made from insulated canvas and double-glazed glass. The smaller, all-glass dome, 38 feet in diameter and 23 feet tall, adds to the architectural intrigue.

The domes are designed in a Buckminster Fuller-inspired metal structure, which posed unique engineering challenges. The domes intersect at three-quarters of their height, making the design even more complex than a traditional hemisphere.

Acoustics and Shading
To address acoustic challenges, absorbent panels and special flooring materials are used to create a balanced sound environment. The larger dome provides shade for the smaller glass dome. The building also features self-shading elements, with tall trees to the south offering natural protection from the sun.

Sustainability and Materials
The design incorporates energy-efficient features, such as local slate stone laid out in diagonal strips for added visual appeal. Angular walkways lead visitors through a landscape filled with native plants and water features, creating an inviting outdoor space. The north side is cooled by artistic gardens and plantations, while dense greenery shields the southern side from heat.

In summary, Restaurant Callisto is more than just a place to eat—it’s a landmark in Udaipur. Combining geodesic domes, sustainable materials, and innovative design, it creates a dining experience that blends form and function. The project is a testament to creativity, architectural excellence, and sustainability, offering an unforgettable experience for its visitors.
