The Barn House
- Project Name : BARN
- Location : Badi Farms, Udaipur
- Site area : 3,77,665 Sq. Ft (8.67 acre)
- Built-up area : 3000 Sq. Ft
- Status : 2015
- USP of the project : Barn building made in Stone and Lime
1. Traditional Stone and Lime Construction:
The stone and lime mortar construction gains strength over time, lasting for centuries. Traditional methods, using local ingredients, were employed, and local craftsmen (karigars) played a key role in the building process.
2. Barn Style Architecture:
The design merges barn-style architecture with traditional methods to suit the hot, dry climate. Passive cooling features, such as small shaded windows and jali/screens, help cool the breeze through corridors via the Venturi Effect. An open, shaded courtyard provides a gathering space for farmers.
3. Passive Cooling Measures:
The stone and lime structure maintain a temperature 10-15 degrees cooler than the outside. Shaded windows and jali screens enhance natural cooling, while the courtyard offers sheltered outdoor space.
4. Mango Tree Transplantation:
A mango tree transplanted from another green building site serves as the focal point of the landscape.
5. Use of Local Materials:
Local stone is used for the building, flooring, tiling, and coping, while lime mortar is prepared on-site. Salvaged wood is used for railings, and local labor is employed to maintain the authenticity of the materials.
6. Lime Mortar Detailing:
The mortar is recessed one inch from the stone surface, with red mud filling the joints. Over time, green moss will grow, adding charm to the building’s elevation.
7. Environmental Protection:
The barn house seamlessly merges with its surroundings, leaving no negative impact on the environment.
8. Water Drainage System:
Rainwater drains from the building to greenhouses, percolating into the ground at the lowest point. A gate controls water flow during seasonal river streams.
